Gym Cleaning Checklist

Cleaning Checklist for Commercial Gyms

Did you know cold and flu viruses survive on hard surfaces for 24 hours? And some stomach bugs, like the norovirus, can live on surfaces for over a month. In addition, the bacteria that causes MRSA lives on surfaces for weeks and is known to thrive in damp or humid locker rooms and gyms. Busy gyms are where a single piece of exercise equipment can spread germs and cause illnesses to many people. Fortunately, spreading these germs can decrease with consistent gym cleaning and disinfecting.

To help keep your gym germ free, we have outlined a few practices and a cleaning checklist.

1. Wash your hands before cleaning.

Wash your hands before you clean to prevent germs from spreading.

2. Always wear PPE while cleaning.

To ensure you are protected while cleaning and disinfecting, wear gloves and any other PPE.

3. If using disinfectant wipes, wipe the surface in the same direction to avoid cross-contamination.

In addition, multiple wipes may be necessary because the dwelling time of most disinfectant wipes is approximately four minutes.

4. The disinfectant liquid has to remain on the surface based on the product recommendations.

When cleaning the equipment, you should pay attention to the dwelling time of the disinfectant. It is how long the disinfectant has to remain wet on a surface to work; this varies from 30 seconds to 10 minutes.

5. When finished, dispose of cleaning materials and PPE and wash your hands.

To help prevent germs from spreading, dispose of any cleaning materials as soon as you have finished with them, and wash your hands immediately.
